Being a Responsible Concealed Carrier

Although many servicemen and law enforcement officials are able to carry concealed weapons without incident, not all concealed carriers are equally responsible. This is particularly true in the case of carriers who have very little experience owning or handling weapons. New gun owners who have recently obtained concealed carry permits should take the time to educate themselves on how to handle this new responsibility. In your quest to become a responsible concealed carrier, the following tips are sure to serve you well.

Take a Class in Gun Safety
Many concealed carriers wish to use firearms for personal protection. While there’s nothing wrong with owning a gun for this purpose, it’s important to realize that your odds of needing to use it in this manner are very small — particularly when you’re out in public. In fact, if you’ve never fired a gun or lack a solid grasp of how your weapon works, you may wind up doing more harm than good. For this reason, inexperienced concealed carriers are strongly advised to take classes in firearm safety before going out in public with their guns. Classes should include how to properly use concealment holsters.

Never Show People Your Weapon
Unless you intend to use it, your weapon needs to remain concealed in proper concealment holsters, such a shoulder, hip, or paddle holster. Whether you’re trying to appear intimidating or you simply wish to show your weapon to someone you think will be impressed, there’s no good excuse for removing a firearm from concealment holsters without just cause. Doing so is liable to cause unnecessary panic and land you in a heap of trouble.

Don’t Pull Your Gun Prematurely
As previously stated, the odds of you needing to use your weapon in public are incredibly slim. That being the case, you’ll need to be extra-certain that a situation warrants taking out your weapon before retrieving it from its hiding place. Misinterpreting a situation and pulling guns from concealment holsters prematurely can have disastrous consequences for both you and those around you.

In the interest of upholding safety, concealed carriers who lack experience with weapons need to do their homework before venturing out in public with hidden firearms. Putting the pointers discussed above to good use can go a long way in ensuring your safety and keeping the peace.
